Blake Bozeman, 31, was shot and killed around 11:50 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 23, 2023, inside a bar in the 1300 block of H Street NE, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.

Bozeman, who played Division I basketball at Morgan State University in Baltimore, was celebrating a friend’s birthday when gunfire broke out.

Three others—a woman and two men—were also injured in the shooting but survived.

On Friday, March 21, authorities announced the arrests of Cotey Wynn, 44, of Northeast DC, and Antwan Shelton, 41, of Southeast DC, who have both been charged with first-degree murder while armed.

Bozeman was more than an athlete.

He was a rising entrepreneur, mentor, and award-winning realtor who ran a nonprofit, The Pivot Group, focused on helping young Black athletes transition to professional life after sports, according to his obituary.

“Blake was many things to many people,” his family wrote. “But he was most proud of the titles of father and husband.”

Just two months before his death, Bozeman married his wife, Tiera, in front of their three children: Braelen, Bryson, and Berkeley.

A GoFundMe, launched shortly after the shooting, raised tens of thousands of dollars to support his grieving family.

Bozeman earned a bachelor’s degree in marketing and a master’s in journalism—both by age 25—and was known for his booming laugh, big ideas, and magnetic personality.

He is survived by his wife, three kids, parents, sister, niece, nephew, grandmother, and a wide circle of friends, teammates, and clients.

“This act of violence has left a community shattered,” wrote fundraiser organizer Evan Marbury. “But most importantly, it has left a woman as a widow and three children fatherless.”

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with additional information is asked to contact the Metropolitan Police Department.
